Much of Eccles grew up in the Victorian years after the railway arrived, and terraced streets from that period still run through Patricroft, Barton and the older roads around the town centre. Roofs of that age are typically slate, with brick chimney stacks and lead flashing that have had well over a century of weather.
Monton and Ellesmere Park, both of which include conservation areas, have larger period houses, while Winton and Peel Green are largely semi-detached streets and estates from the twentieth century, and the town centre has a good share of flats. Tiled roofs with mortar-bedded ridges, flat roofs on extensions and blocks, and uPVC roofline are all part of the mix. We work on all of them.
We are based at 311a Liverpool Road in Eccles, so Patricroft, Monton, Winton, Peel Green and Barton-upon-Irwell are all a short drive.

Housing in Eccles ranges from Victorian terraces and large period houses to streets of semi-detached homes, flats and newer estates, and each kind of building has its own typical roof faults. These are the jobs our roofers are called out to most across Eccles, Monton, Winton, Patricroft, Peel Green and Barton.
The terraced streets of Patricroft and Barton, and the older rows around the town centre, were roofed in slate when they were built. After a century or more the fixing nails rust through before the slates themselves wear out, so slates slide down or lift off in high wind. In most cases they can be re-fixed or replaced with matching slates and the rest of the roof left alone. See our slate roofing.
From the terraces of Patricroft to the large period houses of Ellesmere Park and Monton, older homes in Eccles still have tall brick chimney stacks, and plenty of them are no longer in use. Sitting above the roofline they take the worst of the weather: the pointing washes out and the lead flashing at the base cracks or lifts away from the brickwork. Damp on a chimney breast or a stain on the ceiling beside it is the usual warning. See our chimney repairs and lead flashing repairs.
The semi-detached streets of Winton, Peel Green and Monton mostly have tiled roofs, with the ridge tiles and roof edges bedded in sand and cement mortar. Years of frost and rain crack that mortar until it drops out, leaving ridge tiles loose and the verges open to wind-driven rain. See our ridge tile repairs and dry verge systems.
Bay windows are common on Eccles terraces and semis alike, and each one has its own small roof covered in lead, felt or tile. If the covering cracks, or the seal where it meets the house wall fails, water shows up as a stain on the ceiling or wall directly above the window. See our bay window roof repairs.
Kitchen extensions, dormers and garages across Monton, Winton and Ellesmere Park are often covered in felt that has blistered, cracked or started to hold water. One isolated fault on an otherwise sound roof can be patched; when the whole surface is failing, a new covering is the better use of money. See our flat roofing.
Moss washed off the roof and leaves from street and garden trees block gutters quickly, and on a terraced row one blocked length can spill onto next door as well. Overflowing water then soaks the fascia boards behind the gutter until the timber softens and the brackets work loose. See our gutter repairs and gutter cleaning.
